Successful mass meeting held by All India Bank Employees Association in Mumbai

Year-long agitation to be held for recruitment of staff in banks

Report by Kamgar Ekta Committee (KEC) correspondent

After the May 2023 National Convention in Mumbai, AIBEA held another successful mass meeting in Mumbai on 25 October 2023.

The meeting was addressed by the General Secretary, Com. CH Venkatachalam and President, Com. Rajen Nagar.

The leaders said that the Union will chalk out a year-long agitational program to focus on recruitment. People were retiring, the workload is increasing on the staff. By not recruiting workers they are trying to attack the Union’s strength.

The AIBEA has called for an all out agitation and is going to the people to win their support by telling them as to how the Government was out to finish the public sector banks.

Workers have to be prepared for the coming attacks. They said that AIBEA was built in 1946 when there were attacks on bank workers. At that time there were mostly private banks.

The AIBEA has been in the forefront in the fight against privatisation of banks from 1990 and because of the fight by the workers they have been able to stop down privatisation for 33 years. The government has been successful in merging banks and now they have only 13 major banks. Strong workers’ union is very important to steer the country to all round progress.

They said, every year they have bipartite negotiations and they get some wage hikes. The struggles of workers and their unity will enable the leaders to negotiate for better pay hike this time.
