A win for Samsung’s Sriperumbudur unit workers

Report by Mazdoor Ekta Committee correspondent

On 15 October, the employees of the Sriperumbudur unit of Samsung Electronics held several rounds of talks with the state government and the company management. Through this process, they were successful in getting their demands accepted. Thereafter, the workers announced that they would end their 37-day strike.

The consultations resulted in the agreement that the pre-decided wage hike would be implemented and no disciplinary action would be taken against the striking workers.

Samsung employees had been on strike since 9 September 2024 over their demands. During this time, the Chief Minister of the state had called on the employees to end the strike.

The workers continued the strike demanding recognition of their union, which is now a matter before the court. In the talks held between the government and the workers on 15 October, a consensus was reached that all parties would wait for the legal outcome. The government also supported the demand for registration of the union. After this the union agreed to withdraw the strike.
