Thousands of teachers demand higher wages in Portugal

Report by Kamgar Ekta Committee (KEC) correspondent

Tens of thousands of public school teachers and staff of Portugal demonstrated in Lisbon, the capital, on 14 January 2023 demanding higher wages and better work conditions. It was one of the biggest protests in recent times organized by the Union of All Education Professionals (STOP).

Teachers at the lowest scale get only around 1,100 euros and at the top scale less than 2,000 euros per month. Looking at the current cost of living crisis, teachers say, current wages are too low. “We deserve better wages as we have devoted our entire life to teaching”, they said.
