Warning for public power distribution, generation and transmission companies in the country

Electricity employees, engineers, officers and contract workers, friends, if we are one, we are safe

On 23 February 2025, a nationwide convention of electricity workers’ unions planned in Nagpur against privatization

Message from All India Federation of Electricity Employees (AIFEE)

(Translation of message in Marathi)

The government that came to power at the Center has been trying to pass the amended Electricity Bill from 2014 till 2025 in the Parliament. This bill could not be passed in the Parliament due to huge opposition from various state governments, MLAs, MPs, more than 500 farmers’ organizations, electricity workers’ unions, and stakeholders. The central government allowed franchises, parallel power distribution licenses, open access, and private capitalists to set up power generation projects near coal mines.

The process of privatization has been started through the smart prepaid meter project. The privatization process was delayed for some time due to huge opposition. This process was resumed after the 2024 Lok Sabha general elections. It has begun strongly across the country. Currently, under pressure from the Central Government, the state governments have started the process of privatization of the government distribution companies in the Union Territories of Chandigarh and in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Despite the strong opposition from the local people, electricity consumers, electricity employees and engineers to the privatization process, the state governments of the above states have started completing the tendering process for privatization.

This is a warning signal for the public distribution, generation and transmission electricity companies in the country. The decision to launch a nationwide struggle against this was taken in the meeting of the National Coordination Committee Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE) held in Delhi on 19 January 2025. According to the decision, it was decided to hold massive demonstrations and public outcry in various state capitals on 31st January against privatization of electricity companies.

All federations and organizations affiliated to the All India Federation of Electricity Employees across the country should actively participate in this movement.

On February 23, 2025, the NCCOEEE has organized a national conference of office bearers of national level trade unions in the country at Comrade A.B. Bardhan Hall, 44 Kingsway, Parvana Bhavan, Mohannagar, Nagpur. The office bearers and members of all trade unions in the country and the state are invited to participate in this conference.

Yours faithfully

Comrade S. Murthy President Tamil Nadu

Comrade Mohan Sharma General Secretary Maharashtra

Comrade Shamim Ullah Working President Karnataka

Comrade Krishna Bhoyar Deputy General Secretary Maharashtra

All central office bearers All India Federation of Electricity Employees
