College and university employees go on pen down strike in Bihar

Report of Mazdoor Ekta Committee

On the call of Bihar State University Employees Federation, a two-day pen down strike of employees was held on 6 May 2026 in 12 colleges and university offices under Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University.

Non-teaching workers at Sundarwati Women’s College in Bhagalpur, Bihar, staged a sit-in in the college campus to press for their pending and legitimate demands. Raising slogans against the government and university administration, the striking workers alleged that their problems had been ignored for a long time. Despite submitting memorandums and holding negotiations, no concrete decisions have been taken by the government and administration on their 15-point demands.

Officials of the Bihar State University Employees Federation stated that this fight is not just about wages or service conditions but about the dignity and rights of workers. Their main demand is that the Supreme Court’s orders be implemented. Pay cuts should be reversed, Class III and IV employees should receive timely promotions, and ACP (Assured Career Progression) and MACP (Modified Assured Career Progression) benefits should be implemented with the March 2026 salary. Workers from older colleges should not be transferred to new colleges. This causes workers to face family and financial difficulties.

Federation leaders have warned that this movement is not just a struggle of workers in Bhagalpur but a joint struggle of university workers across Bihar. They announced that on 20 May, university workers across Bihar will unite and hold a massive procession and intensify their agitation for their demands.
