Indian Railway workers demand minimum 8 hours out-station rest for running staff for ensuring safe rail operation

Letter of South Coast Railway Mazdoor Union, Guntur Division

Indian Railways has presently linked grant of out-station rest to the duration of duty performed. This approach ignores physiological and operational requirements of running staff for recovery from fatigue. Their duty may involve night working, irregular working hours, disturbed sleep, prolonged waiting, intensive concentration and operational stress. They must therefore be given minimum 8 hours of out-station rest irrespective of duration of the duty performed.
