Successful All India Joint Strike in SAIL steel plants on 28th October

Report by Kamgar Ekta Committee (KEC)correspondent

Angered by the continuous denial and deprivation of the basic rights of the workers by the management of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), all the central Trade Unions in SAIL – CITU, AITUC, INTUC, HMS and BMS – called for the joint strike on 28th October and submitted their 14-point charter of demands as a part of their strike notice (Enclosed below). The demands included the payment of bonus and pending dues of the past 31 months with arrears.

The workers struck work at all the plants of SAIL in West Bengal, at Durgapur Steel, Alloy Steel and ISCO plant at Burnpur. The strike was also observed at other steel plants in the country including Bokaro, Bhilai, Rourkela, etc.

Workers were not deterred from going on strike by the threats issued by the management. Police was deployed to attack the striking workers at several places, including at the gates of the Durgapur Steel Plant in West Bengal. Despite the intimidation and threats, the steel workers carried out their strike for their demands.
