Electricity employees across Uttar Pradesh protested on 10 January 2025 against the preparation of roadmap for privatisation of power distribution companies of the State. In addition to Lucknow, large protest meetings were held in major cities, including Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Kanpur, Gorakhpur, Prayagraj, Bareilly, Noida, and Jhansi, under the banner of the Vidyut Karmchari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti, UP.

Protests were held in particular against the approval given to the Energy Task Force (ETF) of the State to the proposal to appoint a transaction advisor to prepare a roadmap for the privatisation plan. The Samiti leaders warned that this is the first step towards privatizing the entire electricity sector in Uttar Pradesh.

The Samiti has announced an intensified protest on January 13, when all employees, contract workers, and engineers across the state will wear black armbands and hold protest meetings. The UP Power Officers’ Association will also join the protests on 13 January.
