Led by All India Kisa Mazdoor Sabha (AIKMS), landless and poor peasants held a rally against disconnection of electricity in entire basti in villages Kanti and Sadwan, Prayagraj.
Power department is imposing smart metres which charge non-subsidized rates, higher peak hour rates and disconnect automatically when recharge expires. This is pushing entire colonies into darkness. Power is reconnected after extracting bribes of Rs 200 to 500 per house.
Sanyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM) and AIKMS are demanding 300 units free power to all houses and shops, NO to Smart metres and subsidized power to the poor.
Government of India had promised not to implement these New Power Act provisions. But BJP UP govt has started implementation, creating difficulties for the poor.
Such campaigns against high electricity tariffs and smart metres are being conducted in several villages
