Massive Demonstrations planned against Distribution Utility Meet in Mumbai on the Agenda of Privatization: Decision for Nationwide Movement Against the Anti-People Policy of Electricity Privatization
The National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE) has decided to strongly oppose the Distribution Utility Meet scheduled for 04 and 05 November in Mumbai, which is centered on the agenda of privatization. Additionally, it has been resolved that a nationwide movement will be launched to vehemently protest the central and state governments’ policy of electricity privatization, particularly the ongoing privatization processes in Uttar Pradesh and Puducherry, the granting of parallel licenses to private entities in Maharashtra, and the privatization in Chandigarh.
This decision was taken during an online meeting of the National Coordination Committee of Electricity Employees and Engineers (NCCOEEE). The meeting was mainly attended by Shailendra Dubey, Chairman of the All India Power Engineers Federation; P. Ratnakar Rao, Secretary General; R.K. Trivedi, President of the All India Power Diploma Engineers Federation; Mohan Sharma, General Secretary and Krishna Bhoyar of the All India Electricity Employees Federation; Sudip Dutta, General Secretary and Subhash Lamba, Vice President of the Electricity Employees Federation of India; and Samar Sinha, President of the All India Power Mens Federation. The meeting was chaired by Subhash Lamba.
Shailendra Dubey, Chairman of the All India Power Engineers Federation (AIPEF), stated that the meeting expressed deep outrage over the fact that the main agenda of the Distribution Utility Meet is the privatization of electricity distribution companies, and the organizers include major private players such as Tata Power, BSES Reliance Power, and the Indian Smart Grid Forum. Furthermore, the All India Discom Association is also prominently involved in this meet, openly assuming the role of an intermediary between the government and private entities.
The Coordination Committee has resolved that on 04 and 05 November, thousands of electricity employees will stage a vigorous protest right at the venue of the Distribution Utility Meet, to be held at the Sahara Star Hotel in Mumbai. They will submit a memorandum to the Union Power Minister, Shri Manohar Lal Khattar, demanding the cancellation of the anti-consumer and anti-employee decisions on electricity privatization in Uttar Pradesh and Puducherry, and that parallel licenses not be granted to private entities in industrial cities of Maharashtra. They will also demand the scrapping of the failed experiment to privatize Chandigarh, which was already running profitably in government sector.
In support of the protest demonstrations in Mumbai on 04 and 05 November, and against the privatization in Uttar Pradesh, Puducherry, and Chandigarh, vigorous protest demonstrations will also be organized on 04 and 05 November in the capitals and project sites of all states and union territories across the country.
It has also been decided that if the central and state governments continue with the policy of electricity privatization, the country’s 2.7 million electricity employees, contractual workers, and engineers will be compelled to launch a nationwide movement, and the entire responsibility for this will lie with the government and management.
The Coordination Committee has resolved to actively support the ongoing movement against electricity privatization in Uttar Pradesh, and if electricity employees in Uttar Pradesh are suppressed, the country’s 2.7 million electricity employees will not remain silent spectators; there will be a sharp reaction, and a movement will be launched across the country.
During the meeting, the ongoing 312-day continuous movement against privatization in Uttar Pradesh was described as historic, and the electricity employees of Uttar Pradesh were commended. Deep concern was expressed over the initiation of the electricity privatization process in Puducherry alongside Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, a strong opposition was resolved against granting parallel licenses to private entities in cities such as Navi Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, and Nagpur in Maharashtra.
