Commuters in Mumbai demand affordable public transport and halt to BEST privatisation on Human Rights Day

Demand letter submitted by Aamchi Mumbai Aamchi BEST and other organizations to the Commissioner, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)

On 10 December 2025, commuters in Mumbai organized a demonstration and urged the municipal corporation (BMC) to halt the growing privatisation of the city’s BEST public transport buses and revoke the recent fare hike. They said that the shift to privately leased buses has not reduced expenses; instead, it has led to frequent service disruptions and reduced safety. At the same time, commuters have strongly demanded that the sale of BEST land holdings to private builders must be stopped immediately. Instead of such monetisation, the corporation should strengthen BEST by merging it into the BMC budget, expand its fleet to at least 6,250 buses, and restore it as a fully functional public service.
