After significant improvements in government power distribution companies, the decision to privatize Purvanchal and Dakshinanchal discoms should be withdrawn – Sangharsh Samiti

The Vidyut Karmachari Sanyukt Sangharsh Samiti, Uttar Pradesh, (UPVKSSS) has demanded that the decision to privatize the Purvanchal and Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam be immediately reversed. The Sangharsh Samiti stated that in recent years, state-owned distribution companies have not only strengthened their financial position but have also recorded significant improvements in revenue collection and line losses, a testament to the efficiency and commitment of the public sector.

Central office bearers of the Sangharsh Samiti said that the Power Ministry of the Central Government itself has accepted that government power discoms have written a new chapter by making comprehensive reforms.

Discoms are projected to improve from a loss of ₹67,952 crore in 2013–14 to a profit of ₹2,701 crore in 2024–25. Nationally, AT&C losses have fallen to 15.04%, the prescribed standard.

The Sangharsh Samiti said that the major reasons behind these improvements were the huge technological investments under the RDSS scheme and the continuous hard work and dedication of the electricity workers.

In Uttar Pradesh, more than ₹67,000 crore has been invested in Purvanchal and Dakshinanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam alone and its results are clearly visible.

The Sangharsh Samiti noted that when government distribution companies are consistently delivering excellent results, handing over public assets worth crores of rupees to private companies in Uttar Pradesh is an anti-people move. Privatization is likely to impose additional financial burdens on farmers and poor consumers and increase electricity rates.

The Samiti said that the ongoing agitation against the privatisation of Purvanchal and Dakshinchal discoms continued today, the 418th day, with widespread protests in all the districts and projects across the state.
