Postal workers in thousands strike again for pay rise in Germany in line with rise in prices of essentials

Report by Kamgar Ekta Committee (KEC) correspondent

Around 8000 Deutsche Post employees went on strike again on Monday, 6 February 2023 across Germany demanding acceptance of their demand for wage hike.

Major strike rallies were held in 10 cities, including Berlin, Munich and Rostock. On Tuesday, thousands again stopped work and protested, including in Hamburg, Dortmund, Saarbrücken, Nuremberg, Frankfurt/Main and Stuttgart.

Workers forced the United Services Union (Verdi) to raise the demand for wage hike for 1,60,000 workers for 10% to 15% looking to all round inflation and difficult living conditions.

This strike was called as Deutsche Post failed to come with an offer in the second round of negotiations in January, 2023.

Workers refused to bow down to lower their demand for wage hike and want to be fully compensated for the increased prices for energy, fuel, food and rents.

Postal workers, most of whom are low-income earners, are justifiably outraged by the arrogant attitude of the management who is not willing to accept the demand of 15% wage hike.
