Public awareness campaign against privatization of electricity and smart meters

Report of Mazdoor Ekta Committee correspondent

A meeting of Electricity Employees Federation of India (EEFI) was held in Chandigarh on 4 June 2026, in which it was decided that a public awareness and agitation would be launched across the country.

Representatives from Haryana, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand and Chandigarh Union Territory participated in the meeting. In the meeting, the decision to form an Agriculture Discom in Haryana and install smart prepaid meters was strongly and unanimously criticized. The Federation decided to run an all-India public awareness campaign against these issues.

The Vice President of EEFI stated that the struggle will be intensified on issues related to privatization of electricity, smart meters, Old Pension Scheme (OPS), regularization of contract workers, and labor codes. He stated that the policies being implemented in the power sector will not only harm workers and contract workers but will also be against the interests of the broader public. A public awareness campaign against these policies will be launched starting in July 2026. During this period, public awareness programs will be organized on issues such as workers’ problems, labour codes, wage revision, regularization of contract workers, agricultural discoms, smart metering system, and OPS. This campaign will culminate in large protests outside the headquarters of state power departments in August 2026, ensuring the participation of workers’ families, students, youth, women, and farmers’ organizations.

The speakers said that state-level conferences will be organized by 31 August 2026, prioritizing the issues of contract workers, and thereafter, a one-day nationwide strike of contract workers is also planned in October-November 2026.
