Junior doctors across Andhra Pradesh held a protest, under the banner of the Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association, on the beach on 19 August to press for their demands. The protest was part of a phased strike that has been ongoing since 11 August 2026. The strike involves government medical colleges and teaching hospitals across Andhra Pradesh.
The junior doctors have made it clear that they are fighting for their rights and for justice. They have three main demands:
- A 30% increase in their stipend.
- Withdrawal of the proposal to increase the retirement age of senior doctors from 62 to 65 years.
- Recruitment of MSc and PhD candidates for professor positions in accordance with the rules of the National Medical Commission (NMC).
Despite repeatedly writing emails and letters to the state government, their demands have not been addressed, nor has the government given any response. As a result, they have been on strike for the past 10 days.
According to government orders, the stipend is supposed to be revised by a fixed percentage every two years. The revision was due in January 2026, but it has still not been implemented.
The junior doctors have warned that if the state government does not accept their demands, they will intensify their struggle in the coming days. The doctors emphasized that they are fighting for dignity and respect. They work tirelessly to serve the people and therefore deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
