On 27 August 2026, Aamchi Mumbai Aamchi BEST Joint Action Group along with the joint action committee of BEST workers staged a protest outside the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters. As part of the Kayapalat Prakalp (Transformation Scheme), the Corporation recently decided to hand over 22 depots of the city’s public bus service to private builders. This is in effect monetisation and privatisation of public land. Activists are demanding that the decision of privatising BEST land should be withdrawn, and the wet-lease system should be scrapped. Additionally, the fleet should be increased to at least 10,000 BEST-owned buses and the Corporation must provide sufficient funding to clear BEST’s deficits and ensure its efficient running.
