Joint Struggle Front submits memorandums to all MLAs against parallel electricity distribution license
Today, the Haryana Power Employees and Engineers Joint Struggle Front submitted a memorandum to all Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of the state, opposing the proposal for a Parallel Distribution License. The Front urged the MLAs to prominently raise this critical public-interest issue during the ongoing monsoon session of the Haryana Legislative Assembly and ensure protection of the interests of the state’s electricity consumers, farmers, and employees.
In the memorandum, representatives of the Front stated that the proposal to grant a parallel distribution license to a private company, Eleven Power Private Limited, in Gurugram and Nuh districts poses a severe challenge to the state’s public electricity distribution system. The Front alleged that private companies will only target high-revenue industrial, commercial, and large residential consumers, which will adversely affect the financial condition of state-owned power utilities and will have a detrimental impact on rural, agricultural, and domestic consumers.
The Joint Struggle Front stated that the Gurugram region currently contributes significantly to the revenue of the state’s power utilities. In such a scenario, if high-paying consumers migrate to the private sector, the cross-subsidy mechanism will weaken, potentially imposing an additional financial burden on ordinary consumers in the future.
The Front demanded that all MLAs raise this issue in the Legislative Assembly and call upon the government to clarify its stance. In addition, they demanded that the report of the expert committee formed by the Haryana Electricity Regulatory Commission (HERC) be made public, that an opportunity of hearing be granted to all stakeholders, and that complete protection of consumer interests be ensured.
Ravindra Ghanghas, leader of the Joint Struggle Front, stated that this is not merely an issue concerning two districts, but one that affects the interests of crores of power consumers, farmers, and employees across the entire state of Haryana. Therefore, the government must seriously evaluate the far-reaching consequences before arriving at any decision.
