PRESS RELEASE

The AITUC STRONGLY OPPOSES THE PROPOSED MERGER OF CMPDIL & MECL

An Office Memorandum issued by the Ministry of Mines, dated 13th April, 2022, makes it clear that the Minister of Coal and Mines, Shri Pralhad Joshi, has approved the merger of Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Ltd. (CMPDIL), Ranchi, Jharkhand and Mineral Exploration & Consultancy Ltd., Nagpur, Maharashtra and information is being collected to prepare a Cabinet Note by 20th April, 2022.

The AITUC has shot off a letter expressing their opposition to the proposed merger to the Minister concerned (attached), being attempted in a tearing hurry.

The employees of the two entities have not been consulted at all. Their service conditions are totally different. CMPDIL is owned by Coal India, which is being traded on the stock market, while the MECL is wholly-owned GoI enterprise.

Such mergers, done in a roughshod manner have caused operational glitches, as in the merger of PSU banks, corporatization of Ordnance Factories and so on.

The AITUC has demanded that an in-depth discussion be held with the recognized unions of the two establishments, before proceeding further on hr proposed move.
