Merger of CMPDI and MECL planned – CMPDI workers and AITUC oppose the move

Coal India Limited’s subsidiary, Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) will be merged with Mineral Exploration and Consultancy Limited (MECL). MECL is a Miniratna company of the Ministry of Mines.

It is well known that such mergers lead to elimination of large number of jobs.

It is learnt that the Minister of Coal and Mines, Pralhad Joshi has given the green signal for the merger. Under this, the Director Technology of the Ministry of Mines, Pradeep Singh has written a letter to the CMD of CMPDI and MECL, seeking information about the merger of both the companies. (Enclosed)

The information has been sought through the letter about the authorized capital and paid-up capital of the companies, their current turnover and profit position. The letter has also asked what the business opportunities are, how much labour force will be required in future and what it is at present. Detailed information has also been sought about the properties.

The general secretary of All India Coal Workers Federation and JBCCI member, Com. D D Ramanandan said that the Modi government at the Center is preparing to eliminate Coal India. It is starting with CMPDI. Thereafter BCCL and ECL will be separated from CIL.
